If the french caught any english archers they used to cut off the 2 fingers they used to draw a bowstring.
So When the 2 sides used to meet in battle it was common to see the english archers showing the french that they still had their 2 fingers.
And the universal gesture for ‘fuck you’ was born
This has mostly been debunked by historians as they reckon the bows at the time would have needed 3 fingers to pull the string back .. but it makes for a lovely tale AMIRITE?
Just finished reading Crecy by Warren ellis
it is a story about the battle of crecy
“The Battle of Crécy (occasionally written the Battle of Cressy in English) took place on 26 August 1346 near Crécy in northern France, and was one of the most important battles of the Hundred Years’ War. The combination of new weapons and tactics has caused many historians to consider this battle the beginning of the end of classic chivalry.”
it is told by an english archer. He uses modern slang, swear words which weren’t around then and even mentions an italian footballer.
This is an awesome comic if you have any kind of interest in history or war. Or if you hate the french.
The English casualties are thought to have been around 600-700 compared to the french who reportedly lost about 12,000.
I give this 9/10
